Dining in the Dark: A Famed Restaurant Critic's Struggle with and Triumph over Depression Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charles Monagan -- Honest, touching, absorbing, funny : Bryan Miller has written an incisive and absorbing account of his long battle with depression while (mostly) carrying on as a hardworking journalist and head restaurant reviewer for The New York Times. Here we get all the headlines and details of Miller's illness and the effect it had on his job and tortured personal life. At several points, he sank about as low as a person can sink, yet he managed to right himself to carry on (often with the help of others). Professional that he is, he manages to tell this gruesome tale in a most entertaining way. The main course is his mental state and struggle, but the gravy includes many anecdotes about his writing career, especially while at the Times. Highly recommended. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hunter -- Excellent book. Highly recommend. : Bryan’s honest account of his journey with depression left me with a greater understanding of the illness. Exceptionally written, Bryan highlights the ebb and flow of his depressive state and its impact on his personal and profession life. I found it challenging to do anything but read this book! Although the subject matter is serious, Bryan skillfully balanced it with humorous anecdotes and colorful accounts of his assignments/travels as the NY Times restaurant critic. The book filled my heart with empathy and at times caused me to laugh out loud - a wonderful mix of emotions. I told my brother (Richard R.) who suggested the book, “I’m enjoying it so much I don’t want it to end!” ( Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ladyvln -- humorous and honest-couldn’t put it down : It’s hard to imagine surviving such deep inner torture as this level of depression Mr Miller has experienced. It’s painfully honest and he writes with a sense of humor in spite of it all- I found it very hard to put down- I recommend it to anyone who thinks they have any idea of what another person goes through in their life- thinking others have it so easy- you never know anything about others- better to question, not judge. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hudson Green -- An honest memoir by a brilliant writer. : Dining in the Dark is an often painful and yet hilarious memoir about one man's struggle and eventual triumph over depression. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Thanks you, Mr. Miller! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kathe Cobb -- Touching memoir that is both sad and uplifting : Wonderful book! Both moving and funny, which is very hard to do when writing about mental illness. I couldn't put it down,Bravo Bryan! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gerry Dawes -- Throwing a Bright Light on What It is Like to be On Top the World and Battling Depression : I have know Bryan Miller for many years, but I did not really know him until I read this heart-wrenching book about his battle with depression and I was none too keen on tackling a book about such a, well depressing, subject. But in the first few pages Bryan Miller's writing style swept away the idea that this book was going to be a bummer. Dining in the Dark is a page turner and I found myself pulled into his tortured, but ultimately redemptive saga, fascinated by how a guy with "the best job in the world," that of the restaurant critic of The New York Times managed to pull off being the nation's top restaurant reviewer for more than ten years while carrying a psychological load that would make a mule's legs wobbly. This book will be an inspiration to anyone who has underground such personal turmoil. To the few who have been lucky enough to steer clear of such rocky shoals, Dining in the Dark is a cautionary tale. Thank your lucky stars. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2022 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Babs -- Poignant : I always read this writer's food columns in the New York Times and had wondered where he was when I stopped seeing his byline? Now, I know about his depression. This book is written in an easy accessible style but the subject matter is tough to digest. I applaud Miller for his honesty and sharing, and highly recommend it. On a personal level, I enjoyed reading about some favorite spots and his country farmhouse in the village where I'm now so lucky to live. I hope you are doing well; this book took courage to pen.
